It's freezing cold today!

Winter is here! So, apart from wearing warm clothes, let’s take the chance to see some words related to weather.

Freezing cold is an emphatic expression. We can say, for example: It’s freezing cold today! when the temperature is very low.

Of course, we can talk about cold hands, cold feet..but if it's freezing cold, then we may change the adjective and choose something more suitable: ice-cold! My feet are ice-cold right now! We can also use this word for drinks.. who would like an ice-cold beer? (Always! 😉)
We can collocate cold with wave. This is a cold wave (a short period or spell of a particular type of weather) or with front: a cold front, which means that a moving mass of cold air pushes into a mass of warm air resulting in a fall in temperature.

Take note that cold is not only an adjective; it’s also a noun and it means an illness. So, take care! Don’t get/catch a cold!
And we can also use cold to refer to something or someone unfriendly.  For example: He gave me a cold handshake / The house was a cold, unwelcoming place.
